Information about us

Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences can look back on over 100 years’ of education tradition. Its predecessor institutions are the Geestemünde School of Navigation established in 1879 and the City Technical College inaugurated in 1884. Today, the University has about 2.600 students. The curricula and research activities of the courses are targeted at what is needed in practice and gives this new impetus through future-oriented developments. Most diploma theses are compiled in close co-operation with regional businesses and contribute to strengthening the competitiveness of the economy. This mutual exchange of ideas however also has a stimulating effect on teaching.

The combination of over 100 years’ of practice-oriented teaching experience and future-oriented research is also expressed in the innovative architecture of the University’s new buildings. The former emigrants’ house – in the last century the final port of call for many people before their departure to the New World – today houses the library and the canteen. The brick building’s glass-roofed entrance hall charmingly links parts of the old emigrants’ house of 1849 with the modern lecture rooms and laboratories. As a meeting place, it also helps continue the long tradition of dialogue between representatives from politics, commerce and science in a pleasant atmosphere.
